Hello my name is Te Kaapua and my speech is about, ‘Why we should be taught life skills in school’
Firstly, what does life skills mean?
‘life skills is a skill that is necessary for everyday life. Which means a skill that is most needed in life… and what life are we talking about… mine to be exact.
We should be taught life skills in school at an early age to have awareness of the skills that we need. like... knowing how to type, how to write, how to read, how to play sports, mathematics, just to name a few examples.
Why do we need these skills you ask? We need these skills for the future so we can get a decent careers.
The life skills of being able to type and write can be used as a future career like being an author, software/web/ application developer, transcriptionist and more.
Authors need these skills and their imagination to make a living for themselves by writing books and make money.
Software/Web/Application Developers is a typing job and being taught typing early in school, just like us here in Tautoro school, would give you the benefit to better jobs.
Software coders or web developers are required to have fast typing skills with considerable accuracy. Fast typing skills enables the developer to create codes quickly and efficiently.
Transcriptionist, is a person that writes down words that people say, they may be called - audio typist. They are responsible for typing or writing down words that are heard on video’s and audio’s. To be a transcriptionist you need the skills of fast typing and excellent listening. There are many jobs that relate to these two skills which is another reason why WE should be taught typing at schools.
The life skill of being able to play sports uses your physical skills and strength. So being an athlete, you would have to learn to be in tune with your brains and your body. You have to learn to eat healthy and train your body, so that you don't hurt yourself in the game, race or on the competition day. This skill can be used as a future career like being an international sports player. The students need to be taught these life skills to be able to make one of these careers possible.
The life skill of being able to work out math problems, can be a useful skill for when you’re in shops and need to work out how much money your food or clothes cost and how much change you get back so you don’t get ripped off. This maths knowledge can also help you to become a meteorologist.
A meteorologist is a person that uses scientific principles to explain, understand, observe and forecast the atmosphere to see the affects that it has on our earth, plants and lifeforms.
Many meteorologist have degrees in physics, chemistry and mathematics. The life skills of mathematics gives students, like me opportunities to get a jobs.
So you see people why we need to have life skills taught in school.
It’s so that students can have the benefits of being exposed to great opportunities when choosing a career.
Thank you for listening to my speech.
